Sound Practice Research invites you to an event devoted to the experimental poetry around London’s Writers Forum and Foro de Escritores in Santiago, Chile.
Ranging from concrete, visual, electronic and multimedia explorations of poetry, poets from both groups will discuss, show examples of their works and talk about the connection between the two groups.
Afterwards there will be a performance of the participants.

About:

Writers Forum is a small publisher, workshop and writers’ network established by Bob Cobbing in the fifties. It has published many books and pamphlets including works by John Cage, Allen Ginsberg, Brion Gysin, and P. J. O’Rourke, as well as a wide range of British Poetry Revival modernist poets, such as Eric Mottram, Bill Griffiths, Geraldine Monk, Maggie O’Sullivan and Sean Bonney. Currently the group is directed by Lawrence Upton.

Foro de Escritores is a Chilean literary project founded in Santiago by the the end of 2003 as a deliberate replica of the Writers Forum. The Colección Foro de Escritores has reached over a dozen of handcrafted titles so far. http://www.forodeescritores.cl/
This is the first time both groups meet in one event. The May issue of the Writers Forum Magazine Pocket Litter will be available at the event featuring the work of poets from Foro de Escritores.

Lawrence Upton
Poet, graphic and sound artist, curator. Co-edited Word Score Utterance Choreography in verbal and visual poetry, 1998, with Bob Cobbing, with whom he made collaborative poems, especially Domestic Ambient Noise, 1994-2000. (Commentator on Cobbing. Most recently: Some commentaries on Bob, 2013) Text-sound composition usually using his own visual poems with John Levack Drever, Benedict Taylor & Tina Krekels. Recent publications wrack (2012); Memory Fictions (2012); and Unframed Pictures (2011). Second solo exhibition (“from recent projects”) September 2012, London. photo, synthesis (for solo viola) on commission to Benedict Taylor (2013), now being premiered. Convenes Writers Forum Workshop, directs Writers Forum . Visiting Research Fellow in Music, Goldsmiths, University of London.

Clive Fencott
Writer, sound poet and cybertext artist who has published and performed his work since 1975. In 1974 he started attending the experimental poetry workshops organised by Bob Cobbing at the Poetry Society in London and from this developed an enduring interest in improvised vocal performance. He was a founder member, with Chris Cheek and Lawrence Upton, of the performance group JGJGJGJG. In the 1970s and 1980s he performed extensively with Bob Cobbing and with him founded both the electronic vocal group Oral Complex, with John Whiting, and the improvisation group Bird Yak, with Hugh Metcalf. In the 1990s he wrote and performed with Bill Griffiths. His interest in digital media began in the early 1980s when he collaborated with saxophonist and programmer Steve Moore on the early cybertext project The Manual of the Permanent Waver. He is fascinated by humans’ relationships with and dependences upon the symbolic.

Matthew Robertson
Is a visual poet with publications from the Writers Forum. He is currently a Senior Lecturer in Graphic Design at Bath School of Art and Design.

 

 

 

Martin Gubbins
Is a Chilean poet and visual and sound artist. He has published six books of poetry and visual poetry in Chile, México, England, and the US, as well as four discs of sound poetry, the last of which, Feedback, was launched in 2014 at Bandcamp. He is the founder of Chile’s Foro de Escritores, a project inspired by Bob Cobbing’s Writers Forum.

Gregorio Fontén
His first visual poetry book ‘Contemplación’ was published in 2001 by Libros de la Elipse in Santiago. Since then he has been published in different anthologies and magazines in Chile, Mexico, UK and USA. His musical/sound poetry work has been described as one of ramshackle and unique songs, whose effect is hallucinatory, corrosive; both strange and beautiful. He has presented his work in different events and festival in North & South America and the UK.

Montenegrofisher (Luna Montenegro & Adrian Fisher)
montenegrofisher make visual and sound art works across the mediums of performance, installation, film, drawing and poetry. Their work has developed from ideas of ritual, transformation and the presence of the body. They live in London, UK and show in galleries, film festivals, publications, public spaces and digital formats.

Kurt Folch
Has published four books of poetry: Viaje Nocturno (1996), Thera (2003), Paisaje Lunar (2009), and Líquenes (2014). Folch has collaborated with el Foro de Escritores since 2004. He has also translated William Shakespeare (The Merry Wives of Windsor), George Oppen (a selection from Oppen’s work), and Tom Raworth (Eternal Sections) into Spanish.

 

 

Martín Bakero
Poet, musician and psychotherapist (therapoet). He has presented performances, lectures, films, expositions, installations and radio programs in many locations throughout Europe and North, Central and South-America. He has experimented with combinatorics, permutation, genetics, astrobiology, quantum mechanics, sound, vision and psychics arts. He studied electro-acoustic composition in the conservatory of Paris and teaches in the University of Paris, México and Chile specialising in severe personality disorders and poetry. His research is the transformation of the symptom in art: symptomart; and the acousmantik, a way for the problem to become poem, transforming the fixed consonants into free ‘vowels’ and the lost ‘vowels’ into real optopoetrysound.
